Become a Certified Pool & Spa Inspector
The Certified Pool & Spa Inspector® (CPI®) lays the groundwork for health officials and pool operators to carry out inspections of pools and spas, ensuring a clean, healthy, and safe environment for both staff and patrons of public swimming facilities.
Upon completion of the CPI training course and passing the exam, the credential holder will possess the necessary skills to:
- Understand the basis for code requirements & why a violation is a public health hazard
- Perform an inspection of the pool & spa area
- Evaluate swimming pool operation & maintenance
- Assess the circulation system and all its components
- Evaluate a facility for VGB Act compliance
- Recognize all the elements of spa inspections
- Understand recreational water illnesses
- Properly maintain supervision and operator records
- Recognize the aspects of aquatic play features
- Understand pool design standards and their impact on public health
Prerequisites to Apply
- 2 years of industry experience is recommended
- Successful completion of the Certified Pool & Spa Inspector® (CPI®) course
- Pass the CPI Exam
Exam Information
To achieve CPI® (Certified Pool Inspector®) certification, completing the CPI course and passing the CPI Exam is necessary. If opting for the virtual exam, an additional registration form and a $115 fee are required. The CPI Exam lasts for 1 hour, allows the use of reference materials, and consists of 35 multiple-choice questions. To pass, a score of 75% or higher is needed.
Testing options:
In person with the in-person CPI Class given by Heather Linton
Exam Retest Form: If you didn’t pass the exam, you can reschedule a retest within a year of your testing date and not have to take the course again.
Maintain Your Certification
The deadline for recertification is December 31 of the year your certification expires. If you miss this deadline or the 90-day grace period after (April 1 of the following year), a late fee will be added to your certification. If you go beyond 1 year past your certification expiration, it will be necessary to reapply for certification, provide evidence of total continuing education hours, and pay both the recertification fee and the late penalty.
