Newcomers to the pool industry or those responsible for pool maintenance routes will benefit from this course. It covers the PHTA Service Tech Manual, providing all the necessary knowledge to meet industry standards.
Upon successful completion of this pool maintenance certification course, you will have:
- Gained a strong understanding of safety, , pool maintenance, pool circulation, filtration, and water quality
- Learned about other important aspects such as electrical systems, pool structures and finishes, heaters & controls, and customer service
- Earned a name for yourself in the pool industry as a knowledgeable maintenance person
Prerequisites to Apply (industry experience is not required)
- Successful completion of the Certified Maintenance Specialist® (CMS®) course (for those candidates that practice in states that require the CMS for licensing, please read the "Information for States Requiring Certification" section below)
- Pass the CMS Exam
Those who complete the course will earn 24 CEUs, and are eligible to take the CMS certification exam.
Exam Information
To earn your CMS® (Certified Maintenance Specialist®) certification, you’ll need to successfully complete the CMS course and sit for the CMS Exam. The exam lasts for 1.5 hours, allows the use of reference materials, and consists of 75 multiple-choice questions. A passing score is 75% or higher.

Exam Retest Form: If you didn’t pass the exam, you can reschedule a retest within a year of your testing date and not have to take the course again.

Maintain Your Certification
To maintain your certification status, please ensure that your recertification application is submitted on or before December 31 of the year when your certification expires. Failure to do so by the specified date, or by the end of the 90-day grace period (April 1 of the following year), will lead to the application of a late fee to your certification. If you miss the one-year mark after your certification expiration, you will be required to reapply for certification, provide evidence of completed continuing education hours, and make payment for the recertification fee along with the late penalty.
